What was the Most Expensive Movie Made?

In recent years, there have been quite a few movies that might be considered when asking that question, because there are different movies that fall within the same league in terms of mega-dollar production costs.  However based on numbers available at the time this is being written, the most expensive movie made so far is the 3rd part in a series of popular movies produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

What was the most expensive movie made

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End cost an estimated $300,000,000 to produce.  Directed by Gore Verbinski, this sequel in the Pirates of the Caribbean series was shot in a variety of different places.  Parts of the film were shot in a set at Universal Studios, and some footage was done at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.  In case you are unfamiliar, the Bonneville Salt Flats are where world land speed records are set.  The large expanses of flat terrain have been found to be well matched to race vehicles trying to break new land speed records.  Apparently, the Salt Flats were also found to be a good match for filming certain scenes for the At World's End sequel.  Additional film footage was shot along the California coast, at Niagara Falls, and in Hawaii.  These are just some of the locations where portions of the movie were filmed.  The work to produce this film was tremendous!  So, you can see how the production costs added up!

Related to the $300 million price tag of the film, just to give you a comparison, that's more than the cost to purchase a Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet that can seat over 500 people.  In other words, $300 million dollars is a LOT of money to be spent on producing a movie.  Naturally, movie makers don't make films so that they can loose money, and you can bet that Disney didn't loose money on their popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie series.  Box office sales show that this movie topped over $963 MILLION!  Even as this is being written, a new big dollar movie can come out soon that becomes the new winner of the question: What is the most expensive movie made?  For now, Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End is the most expensive movie ever made.
