Current Designs Sirocco KayakThe Sirocco kayak is based on the popular composite Gulfstream model. Instead of the composite material of the more expensive Gulfstream, the Sirocco kayak is made of more economical rotomolded polyethylene. In case you are unfamiliar with rotational molding (aka rotomolding), it is a unique plastic molding process where a plastic resin powder is placed in a mold. The mold is then heated to the melting point of the plastic powder. At the same time, the mold is spun along different axes in order to use centrifugal & centripetal forces to evenly coat the inside of the mold with the melted plastic. At just the right time, the mold is then cooled and the plastic solidifies into the internal shape of the mold. It is possible to create large hollow parts with this method and material usage can be quite efficient. In other words, it is possible to create large parts with a minimal amount of plastic material that is required to create the relatively thin wall thickness of the part. This savings in material costs is part of the reason that rotomolding can be a more economical method to create a product than some of the other manufacturing processes. As you might imagine, you need a very big mold in order to create something as large as a kayak! Not to mention that you then need the external mechanism to spin this large mold along various axes. You end up with a very large molding machine. It is no easy process to produce kayaks in this way, but Current Designs has adapted this manufacturing process and succeeded in producing high quality kayaks with it. The Sirocco kayak may be a more economical choice than some of the reinforced composite models that Current Designs sells, but that does not mean that the Sirocco is short on quality or features. Some specs on the popular Sirocco kayak are as follows: Length: 16' 10" (513.08 cm) Width: 23" (58.42 cm) Depth: 13.25" (33.655 cm) Weight: 60 lbs (27 kg) Max Load: 375 lbs (168.75 kg) Paddler Size: 160 - 275 lbs (72 - 123.75 kg) The Sirocco comes with 3 separate storage hatches for storing supplies and gear for your outings. The front hatch is 9.5" (24.13 cm) diameter and has a total storage area of 19 gallons (72.2 L). The rear storage hatch is 16.5" x 11" (41.91 cm x 27.94 cm) and provides a storage capacity of 24 gallons (91.2 L). The day hatch located right behind the paddler is 8" diameter (20.32 cm) and provides easy access and a convenient storage volume of up to 12 gallons (45.6 L). The Sirocco kayak comes standard with closed-cell foam bulkheads, retractable skeg, Sea-Dog foot brace, and back band. Optional features include a fiberglass seam and an integral Ritchie compass. If you want a quality touring kayak packed with some great features at a more economical price, then you might want to consider looking at the popular Sirocco kayak.
